Modern Pentathlon is a multi-discipline sport that combines five events:

2. Swimming: Freestyle swimming (200m).

3. Equestrian: Show jumping on horseback.

4. Running and Shooting: Combined event featuring cross-country running and pistol shooting.

🥇 Traditional Modern Pentathlon (Olympic Format)

1. Fencing (Épée)

  • Round-robin format: one-touch bouts against every opponent.

  • Bonus round: extra points for continuous wins.

2. Swimming

  • 200-meter freestyle swim.

  • Points based on time.

3. Equestrian Show Jumping

  • Athletes ride an unfamiliar horse over a course with obstacles.

  • Penalties for refusals, knockdowns, or time overages.

4. Laser-Run (Combined Event)

  • A combination of:

    • Running (3200m total, split into 4 segments)

    • Laser pistol shooting (athletes must hit 5 targets each round)

  • Athletes alternate between shooting and running.

🔄 New Format (Post-2024 / Future Format)

Starting after the 2024 Paris Olympics, the International Modern Pentathlon Union (UIPM) is replacing the equestrian discipline with obstacle racing to modernize the sport and increase accessibility.

🔹 Obstacle Course (to replace riding)

  • Based on ninja-style or military-style obstacle races.

  • Tested in youth and senior competitions.

  • Will become part of the core pentathlon starting in 2025.
