Netball is a fast-paced, team-based sport played with seven players on each team.

Types of Netball

🏐 Main Types of Netball

1. 7-a-side Netball (Traditional Format)

  • Standard version played internationally and in leagues.

  • Played by two teams of 7 players.

  • Court divided into thirds with specific playing positions and rules.

  • Governed by World Netball and included in events like the Commonwealth Games.


2. Fast5 Netball

  • A fast-paced, shortened version of traditional netball.

  • Features:

    • 5 players per team

    • 3 scoring zones (1, 2, or 3 points)

    • Power play quarters (points are doubled)

    • Shorter quarters (6 minutes)

  • Played at the Fast5 Netball World Series.


3. Walking Netball

  • Adapted for older adults or those with mobility issues.

  • Key features:

    • No running or jumping

    • Slower pace, more focus on inclusivity and fitness

  • Popular in community programs and senior fitness groups.


4. Mixed Netball

  • Teams include both male and female players.

  • Commonly played in social leagues and schools.

  • Often allows up to 3 male players on the court at a time.




5. Indoor Netball (Nets Netball)

  • Played in an enclosed court surrounded by nets.

  • Two common formats:

    • 6-a-side

    • 7-a-side

  • Faster pace; ball remains in play more due to rebounds off walls.

  • Popular in countries like Australia, New Zealand, and the UK.


6. Beach Netball

  • Played on sand with a modified set of rules.

  • Usually 4 or 5 players per team.

  • More casual and recreational, often played at beach festivals.

Netball Team Structure

A netball team consists of 7 players, each with specific roles:

Positions:

1. Goal Shooter (GS): Scores goals.

2. Goal Attack (GA): Supports GS and creates scoring opportunities.

3. Wing Attack (WA): Feeds ball to GA and GS.

4. Centre (C): Links attack and defense.

5. Wing Defence (WD): Pressures opponent's WA.

6. Goal Defence (GD): Supports WD and defends against GA and GS.

7. Goal Keeper (GK): Defends goal ring.

Team Strategy:

1. Attack: Create scoring opportunities through passing and movement.

2. Defence: Pressure opponents and block scoring opportunities.
