 Rugby Union

Rugby Union is a full-contact team sport played with 15 players on each team.

Types of rugby union

🏉 Main Types of Rugby Union

🔹 1. 15-a-side Rugby Union (Traditional Format)

  • Standard version played at the professional and international level.

  • 15 players per team, 80 minutes (2 halves of 40 minutes).

  • Includes scrums, lineouts, rucks, mauls, and kicking.

  • Used in:

    • Six Nations, The Rugby Championship

    • Rugby World Cup

🔹 2. 7s Rugby (Rugby Sevens)

  • 7 players per team, shorter matches (2 x 7-minute halves).

  • Faster, more open gameplay with more emphasis on speed and agility.

  • Olympic sport since 2016.

  • Played in tournaments like the World Rugby Sevens Series.

🔹 3. 10s Rugby (Rugby Tens)

  • A middle-ground between 7s and 15s.

  • 10 players per team, 20-minute halves.

  • Common in development tours and invitational tournaments (e.g., Hong Kong 10s).

  • More space on the field than 15s, more structure than 7s.

🔹 4. Touch Rugby

  • Non-contact version of the game.

  • Tackles are replaced by “touches.”

  • Focus on agility, teamwork, and handling skills.

  • Popular in schools, mixed teams, and casual leagues.

🔹 5. Tag Rugby

  • Players wear tags or flags attached to belts.

  • A tackle is made by removing a tag.

  • Fun, inclusive format for all ages, often used to teach basics.

🔹 6. Beach Rugby

  • Played on sand, usually 5-a-side or 7-a-side.

  • Non-contact or light-contact.

  • Fast, fun, and informal—often part of beach festivals or social events.

🔹 7. Wheelchair Rugby (Quad Rugby)

  • Designed for athletes with disabilities affecting at least three limbs.

  • 4 players per team on the court.

  • Played indoors on a basketball-sized court with a volleyball.

  • Featured in the Paralympic Games (though technically governed separately from Rugby Union).

🔹 8. Mixed Ability Rugby

  • Brings together players of all abilities—including those with physical or learning disabilities.

  • Played under traditional 15-a-side rules with slight safety modifications.

  • Focus on inclusion and teamwork.
